Update to Pro-Q 4

2024.12.28

I noticed that FabFilter's Pro-Q had an version upgrade recently, and after reading through some of the changes and new features I decided to upgrade from Pro-Q 3. I think it is worth it, because Pro-Q 3 was already for quite a long time pretty much the only EQ plugin I used on a regular basis.

There are various new features that I think are pretty helpful, like two new character modes for processing, basically just think of it as adding some subtle saturation. There is also a new instance list view, which for me personally isn't a big deal but I can see why for some people it might help them go through different tracks faster and work more efficiently.

There is an EQ sketch tool now, which I guess is pretty cool, but the biggest update to me is that Pro-Q now has built-in spectral dynamics processing, which is a feature I find really useful in dealing with problematic resonances in a specific frequency range. In the past you would need another separate plugin for this kind of task (there are several well-known options but I won't go over them here) but now you can do this directly inside Pro-Q 4! Of course you can also use this kind of processing creatively like emphasizing certain resonances by boosting their frequencies, but that's another topic.

The workflow is largely the same, so if you're familiar with Pro-Q 3 you'll feel at home using Pro-Q 4 too. Now go out there and mix some great music!
